Special Advisory
Week of Sept. 18, 2005
The official and National Million Woman March is preparing to send letters out this week to various US telephone companies requesting that they examine their policies and rates regarding collect calls from correctional facilities/penitentiaries.
The letter/action is an attempt to encourage telecommunication companies to function more responsibly and "fairly" in this matter and in some cases to change their present program and way of doing business as it pertains to calls that are made to the outside world by persons incarcerated.
Sis Empress,(Phile' Chionesu) founder and convener of the Million Woman March and President General of the National Million Woman March and the MWM Universal Movement reported that
"...for the Million Woman March, the Millions More Movement represents the ability to further embark upon necessary "movements and motions" and making more headway in getting some serious work done. We've got to move forward now and take care of business (and that does not mean business as usual). We must do the work that the "Movements of Our Ancestors" mandate...... As part of it;s 30 day count down mobilization and issues resolution operations plan, MWM has initiated a few immediate strategies.........
Step 1- Information, Awareness, and Preparations:
MCI and other telephone companies are making a killing (millions of dollars) off of lives of people who have limited contact with the outside world, and therefore sort of hold folks hostage. Many families and friends who wish to communicate with incarcerated persons, oftentimes, cannot go to the facility to visit loved ones due to illness, inaccessibility to transportation (many have to travel 4-8 hours), lack of income, etc. Needless to say, telephone communications are very important.
The rates imposed by telephone companies are outrageous and their role in the prison industrialized complex system and blatant exploitation of an all ready unjust and inhumane situation must be exposed and progressively address.
A failure to take this request seriously may lead to a boycott of their company.
